WBT… About finding the path of least resistance.

Who hasn’t tried to make big change in their life before? What do you do when you decide it’s time? Do you gingerly tip-toe in with awareness and intention or manically charge forth with determination and force?

Which do you think works better? In spite of what we might think, it’s not the second one.

That’s a little bit counterintuitive, right? Or at least counter to what many of the change gurus say that we need to do. But hear me out.

Setting big bold goals and diving in with determination and force can be more destructive than effective. Too often we set ourselves up for failure by making it all about the doing with no consideration for the being. The easiest way to create the life you want is by finding the path of least resistance. So, ummmm, HOW? Like this.

  1. Refine your intention. What specifically is your goal? And importantly, WHY is this your goal? What will it bring to your life, your state of being, your happiness? Make sure that whatever it is, it really matters to you. If it does, that’s less resistance to deal with.

  2. Think it all the way through. How will this affect your daily life? How will it affect your time, your relationships, your finances, your happiness and your stress. Will there be resistance from someone in your life? And so on. Now ask yourself, is this worth it to you? Is what you may lose, worth what you’ll gain? If it is, that’s less resistance to deal with.

  3. Figure out how to make it as easy as possible. How do you want to approach it? Do you prefer to schedule it? Will it be easier and more meaningful if you do just it when you feel inspired? Are there people you need to stop (or start) hanging out with? Is there a way for you to set yourself up and move through this that will minimize resistance?

  4. Plan how to handle the hard stuff (and know that there will be some). If doing the thing feels heavy, stressful or just plain hard, it’s time to dig deeper. Sometimes we don’t feel like doing what we planned or committed to. It might be because we’re just not feeling it right now or it could be that what you thought you wanted isn’t really what you wanted after all. Either way, that’s okay. You need to meet yourself with compassion, get to the bottom of your resistance and regroup based on what you learned.

Do you see how this is the path of least resistance? In this approach you’ve thought it through, you’ve set yourself up for success. And when you’re not doing it, you don’t make yourself wrong for how you feel, what you choose or the action you take (or don’t). You meet yourself wherever you’re at, with compassion and the desire to understand and support.

To some, this might sound like a recipe for failure. But think about this, if you have to force a change that hard, if you give up time and time again because you feel deprived or it doesn’t come with ease and grace, is that really the route to take? How about trying a kindler, gentler, truer approach?

You don’t actually find the path of least resistance, you create it. And this is how!
